Coincidentally, I came across this website from a tweet from @FunkeyFlashBlack, thus shouting them both out on my blog was an instant no brainer - shoes, clothes... fly shoes, fly clothes. What I like about Inside The Sneaker Box's website is that it screams "we have a genuine passion and good taste for sneakers - now join us!". Not their quote exactly (or at all) but the site and company definitely appeals to sneaker aficionados and people like myself that purchase *cough* sneakers *cough, cough* about twice a year! R.I.P.: GURU

It's been a while since I last posted a blog. It's a been a while since I've searched the internet with some amount of motivation or watched television. I type all this to say that I was surprised to get online the other day to read about Guru's death as I like a lot of his other fans and family was hoping for a positive outcome for this brother and his health. It was also shocking to read about "everything else" (rumors, strife, and a Guru that we possibly did not know) surrounding his death. However, I think the feeling of shock and awe always vibrates within us whenever hip hop has the audacity to show its human face. It can be ugly or pretty but its on us to decide cherish that which is humanly positive.

Hip Hop Doc: Rani G. Whitfield

Hmmmmm....The Hip Hop Doc. I am not referring to Dr. Dre or the D.O.C. and I probably did not have to even say that being that this is the pages of The Greener Side of Hip Hop. But I am referring to Rani G. Whitfield a doctor who is utilizing hip hop to educate the young masses about staying healthy. I came across an article on him this morning but you may already be familiar with his work. So, put down those McDonald french fries and check it out!
Wait, wait, wait.... stop the presses, I just Googled this Rani G. Whitfield and Rani also has a website. "Planet Rock" yes "rockin', no stoppin'" Planet Rock is blessing this brother's website. Eat your salad kiddies because it's the "sure shot"!

Free Mix Tape Downloads: datPiff.com
I believe I heard about this website on Twitter through various tweets. I can't say that I'm not a fan of mixtapes I just haven't taken the time out to listen to any (and this website that I'm about to mention might just be the anecdote to that). But, of course I do know mixtapes are vital to new and old artists in the hip hop arena. What I don't know is the definition of "datpiff" (help me because I could not Google it). And, say it again with me, "daaatpiiiff"! However I will tell you that www.datpiff.com has a kick ass website that specializes in nothing but free mixtape downloads. I wasn't aware that such a site exists but that is the fun part about blogging for The Greener Side of Hip Hop - discovering new ish and loving hip hop even more! Now can someone tell me what datpiff means - please!
WORD, POWER, AND SOUND
"I keep a guard up from the foolishness & propaganda & let the music melodies & my experience in life work through me to bring out NoTTy Trax." - @NottyRas's 140
Okay, the other day I exchanged several "healthy" tweets with a hip hop, dancehall artist who WILL take things to another level - Notty Ras. Born in the Chi and raised in the Bay Area, his Twitter bio simply reads CONQUEROR. His real name Niaybinghi means DEATH TO ALL OPPRESSORS. Yet, NottyRas remains truly humbled by the give and take of life. He's a serious brother, who is nothing less than real when it comes to his music and his future outlook.
"Life is a gift and blessing from the most high... I'm tryin to show my appreciation by bringin out the best of life through word, power and sound."
Currently signed to Illgenetics record label, this former DJ/radio host and music director of Tight Rope Magazine, is currently paving the way for his own lane and putting us on notice that he ain't going no where. (DJ's are you listening to this man's dub plates?) Notty Ras's focus right now IS to continue to build on creating and promoting his music. (DJ's are you playing this man's dub plates?)
I was introduced to this NottyRas via Twitter (yes I do open up those downloads)... and you know what it feels like when great music invades your ears, just giving you a long lasting eargasm? Well, NottyRas has got you covered (no pun intended shallow minds) with his swift on the lyrics, bass bumpin' Bay Area style, hip hop, dancehall track "Fall Back" which delivers nothing but fire! Yeah, I admit I became a "Fall Back" addict for a minute and I'm not going to rehab! (Please click the link for the free download at www.spiceypromotions.com) And for hip hop fans who crave the art of scratching, you will no doubt be pleased with the laid back tempo of "All Hustle" featuring D.J. Greg Scott on the 1's and 2's. Even NottyRas warns that this song may 'cause "slight envy attacks..." Don't read into the confident ego ya'll, his lyrics and music only speak truth.
Nottty Ras's current CD and first solo project "Spit Tape" is currently available on iTunes as is music from his group Baywurld entitled "Those Who Walk On Water". Free downloads are available from both projects (nothing like a Google and youtube search to get you started). But what's NEW with Notty Ras? He's ALL HUSTLE - a women's and boys clothing line in the near future, a yet to be titled dancehall, hip hop mixtape, and he'll be working on his second solo project entitled "I Do What I Know". In the meantime Notty Ras is still servin' up the dub plates over at Spicey Promotions (shout out to DrPostALot!)... so support Bay Area hip hop, support hip hop period by getting those dub plates and spreading the word! Otherwise you know what you can do... fall back! Happy Friday y'all!

I have exchanged tweets with a lot of great people on Twitter especially people from the Hip Hop arena.... and I am sorry I just can't let those great downloads, videos, etc. that I do receive from y'all go unnoticed anymore. So starting today... yes TODAY and each Friday I'll highlight those individuals from my Hip Hop Twitter Neighborhood! First up hip hop, dancehall artist @NottyRas... @DrPostALot is right behind him!
"I Can" - NAS

Just added Nas's "I Can" video to the Children's Hip Hop page. I watched this video with my 7 year old son the other day but he already knows that "he can". I actually found the video AND lyrics on a youtube page... and now Jim Jones and Fabulous are "tweefing" according to Twitter. Kids pay attention to the Children's Hip Hop page until you are old enough to even understand what tweefin' and beefin' is and all the other politics that go along with hip hop.
"Wake Up" - Positive Controversy

I know, I know, I know, I said that I wasn't going to keep doing another video post but this video speaks to a social issue that should outrage anyone - domestic violence. (I know Mr. Mac Walton would have loved this video and the group behind it stands for.) Plus, let's not forget that March is National Women's Month. However, this video is just the type of music that I would want to grace the pages of the Greener Side of Hip Hop. Yes, I am a fan of hip hop but the aim of this blog is to show the other side of "hip hop" as much as possible. This video entitled "Wake Up" by Positive Controversy is deeper than what we are use to seeing in the hip hop arena... and on some levels one could probably say that there is some irony here.
About Positive Controversy (from their website):
"Who?
We are a creative movement which combats the subpar standards set by today’s society.
What?
Bringing awareness to an issue that millions of Americans face daily.
How?
By engaging humanity with a mesage of 'hope, initiative and social awareness."
Please visit their website at: www.positivecontroversy.com and TODAY take time out to think about what you dream and dare to be and create some "positive controversy" of your own.... have audacity!

What can I say about this cat... he's never short of amazing with his pen. He exudes nothing but truth when he speaks of "breathing life into microphones daily." Two New Pages Added

I've been so inspired tonight by watching some classic hip hop and listening to my seven year old son's reaction to classic hip hop music. So, today I added two additional pages to this blog: Classic Hip Hop and Children's Hip Hop.
Spoken Words: A Candle Light Vigil For Hip Hop (Music)

"The mind of an artist and a hip hop head."
A Candle Light Vigil For Hip Hop (Music)
Hip-hop music needs a life jacket.
Someone, anyone, take the time
to rewind and remember the Golden Times
of hip-hop music.
Hip-hop needs a life support system.
It's lacking creativity, originality,
and wisdom. Where is the vision?
Underground MCs are trying,
but even their def tones go unheard.
This new mumbo jumbo of mashed-up words
is not as nearly needed as Rakim-like superb.
I'm on the verge, of giving up on hip-hop.
I am on the verge of calling the coroner,
saying, “she's almost dead, come get her.”
Hip-hop needs motivation, rejuvenation,
elevation. Someone, please perform
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on hip-hop music.
Hip-hop is no longer lyrical.
So in a quiet space in my own time
I am performing my own personal vigil.
It's difficult. It's almost something I cannot
handle. So I light seven candles, one at a time,
saying prayers and meditations for the return
of meaningful and great rhymes.
The first candle lit is for peace.
The second candle lit is for dope beats.
The third is for the return of the old boom bap.
The fourth is for the treble and high hats.
The fifth is for the imaginative MC.
The sixth candle is for hip-hop purists like me.
The seventh and final candle is for hip-hop infinity.
Light your candles and mourn and pray
for hip-hop. In a collective spirit hopefully
we can meditate to make the nonsense stop.
